Stupid is as Stupid Does

Stupid is as Stupid Does

I was at the supermarket the other day, minding my own business, when I looked over at the fruits and vegetables. I saw a stupid act that can only be seen and not told, but I’ll try anyway. A woman had opened a sealed carton of strawberries and was munching on one with a sour look on her face like it wasn’t any good. She then passed one to her little daughter who was waiting there like a little hungry bird who had done this many times before. I didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to make a scene, especially in front of the kid. When I got home I started thinking about what happened and remembered this subject as a topic of conversation in the past. It seems that this act is not only common with grocery shopping but a time honored tradition in some circles. I wouldn’t be surprised if I hadn’t imbibed when I was a lad. I guess maybe I can’t throw a metaphorical handful of grapes. Anyway, those stickers that say “cleaned and ready to eat” don’t really mean anything to me anymore. I will not get fanatical about it though. I mean “Stupid is as Stupid Does”, right?

As a chef I understand the impulse & the problem.
It’s a very reasonable impulse because a fruit can look ripe & not be sweet.
It can be very expensive to the vendors in the aggregate.
The answer is farmer’s markets, they often times will have cuts of their fruits ready to be sampled.
It’s not stealing from the poor schmuck who happens to pick up that pint or quart of strawberries.

People never seem to understand full ripe fruit will be rotten long before it completes transport, must be picked half greeen to surviv and ofen need to be let finish ripen, such s wrapping pears in newsprint and letting them sit a day or two in the pantry.
clean and ready to eat…? No. They may have been washed at point of packing but gods only know what’s been on, in or introduced to them since. They arent’ clean, period, end of subject.
Oh, wait… tis was post on stupid people… your readers are intelligent. Nevermind.

Ha ha! Exactly! But as far as stupid people go I was actually referring to myself. I mean, how could I not know. At my age how could I not even image.

I express dissent! That was not stupidity but only ignorance. You did not know better then and much we now know some… what half century by your profile, yes?… half century later was utterly unknown and undiscovered then. Ignorance may be enlightened, stupidity cannot be fixed.
